# Microlearning: how mini quizzes reinforce school knowledge without overwhelm

Cramming a chapter the night before rarely sticks for a six-year-old. **Microlearning**
— tiny, frequent checks — matches how memory research says practice should look:
retrieve often, space it out, keep sessions short enough to finish.

## What the evidence says

The **testing effect** (retrieval practice) shows that trying to recall information
improves later retention more than re-reading the same material
([Roediger & Karpicke, 2006](https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-9280.2006.01693.x)).
Spaced practice beats massed practice in many educational reviews; the
[IES / What Works Clearinghouse practice guides](https://ies.ed.gov/ncee/wwc/PracticeGuides)
summarize related classroom strategies for teachers — parents can borrow the spirit:
short, repeated, low-stakes checks.

Keep stakes low. High-pressure testing anxiety is a different problem. Soft retries
and playful prompts protect the loop.

## Tonight’s micro-session

1. Pick one skill (letters, beginning sounds, or make-ten).
2. Ask 3–5 quick items — voice or tap.
3. Stop while energy is still good; celebrate the finish.

## How EarnPlay fits

EarnPlay runs **mixed short rounds** drawn from parent-enabled challenge kinds, then
grants minutes. That is microlearning with an honest unlock.
