Digital balance: strategies so kids earn their entertainment time
Digital balance means entertainment has a place — and a price of admission your child understands. Limits alone answer “when must play stop?” Earn-then-play also answers “how do I earn more?”
Guidance worth trusting
The AAP recommends creating a Family Media Plan with shared expectations about device-free times, sleep, and content. WHO guidance on sedentary behaviour reminds families to protect movement and sleep (WHO 2020 guidelines).
Clear if–then contingencies (“if you finish the checks, then you unlock 15 minutes”) are easier for kids to trust than vague threats. Keep the tone positive: earn play, do not shame “lost” time.
Household playbook
- Name the gated apps out loud.
- Publish the earn rule on the fridge (rounds → minutes).
- Use the same order on weekends: earn first.
- Protect sleep: no earn loops after lights-out.
How EarnPlay fits
EarnPlay enforces the earn-then-play deal on-device with Family Controls and auto-relock. Soft retries keep the balance positive. Product · how rewards help learning.
